This Year 1 Personal Safety RSHE lesson helps children understand why keeping safe is important and how they can make sensible, age appropriate choices to protect themselves. Designed for KS1 pupils, the lesson introduces everyday hazards in a calm, structured and reassuring way while reinforcing clear safeguarding boundaries.

Children explore how keeping safe helps prevent injury at home, at school and outside. The lesson makes it clear that while adults help to keep children safe, pupils can also make safe choices themselves by looking, listening and following safety rules.

    What Pupils Will Learn

    • Why keeping safe is important
    • What hazards are and how to recognise them
    • That sharp objects, fire, hot drinks and slippery floors can cause harm
    • Why they must not touch hot items
    • The importance of keeping play areas tidy
    • To tell a grown up if something looks dangerous

    • Never play with matches or lighters
    • Stay away from open flames
    • Tell a grown up immediately if you see fire

    Road Safety

    • Roads are for vehicles, not for playing
    • Stop, look and listen before crossing
    • Look both ways
    • Use a zebra crossing where possible
    • Hold hands with a trusted adult

    • Never go near water without a grown up
    • Listen carefully to adults near water
    • Do not run near pools
    • Use safety equipment such as armbands if needed

    Safeguarding and Trusted Adults

Children are supported to identify trusted adults in school and at home, including:

They practise what to do if they feel worried or unsafe, including:

    • Stop and move away
    • Tell a grown up
    • Follow safety rules
